History in context

The story and the evidence

Wartime Chapters follows Bismarck, Midway, Yamato and Tirpitz through the people, decisions and evidence behind their familiar endings.

A personal history project

Julian Mullins maintains this collection of connected stories and profiles. Each story has a continuous reading sequence; ship, aircraft and weapons profiles offer further detail along the way. Research continues as new records are checked.

Different sources, different questions

Contemporary reports, witness accounts, later recollections and modern histories have different strengths. Each source record explains what has been inspected and what remains uncertain. A transcription and a scan of the same report are not two independent witnesses. A translated record also needs to be distinguished from the original-language document.

What if?

Alternative outcomes are explicitly conditional. They begin with stated assumptions and examine constraints. No invented probabilities, casualty totals or exact campaign delays are presented as fact.

Maps, images and time

The story maps provide geographical orientation, without reconstructed tactical tracks. Markers are approximate, coastlines generalised and calculated distances are not distances sailed. The accompanying text distinguishes plans from completed movements. The Hood witness sketch remains outside the website while publication rights are unresolved. Historical photographs and editorial illustrations are labelled separately; individual captions explain their sources and limits.

Times are retained in the convention of the source being discussed. Naval zone descriptions can look unfamiliar: zone minus two means two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, while zone plus twelve means twelve hours behind it. A clock difference must be resolved before reports can be combined into a minute-by-minute sequence. Chapters identify differences where they matter, rather than silently treating every report as using the same clock.

Corrections and continuing research

Further archival comparison, individual lives and chronology checks remain part of the work. Unresolved points are identified in the text and source notes. Site checks catch broken references and navigation; they cannot establish historical truth. If you find an error or have a useful record, please get in touch with the page and evidence concerned.
