Images & reuse

Last updated

Historical material has its own history of ownership and reuse. A credit identifies a source; it does not always mean an image is free to use.

Check the individual item

Photograph captions and source records identify the collection or record consulted and, where established, the applicable rights statement or licence. A scan, a transcription and an original document may carry different conditions. Age alone does not establish public-domain status, and copyright can differ between countries.

Before reusing an image or document, follow its source link and check the holding institution's current record, attribution requirements and any licence restrictions. If the position is unclear, seek permission from the relevant rights holder. Wartime Chapters cannot grant rights it does not hold.

Historical images and illustrations

Images labelled CC BY-SA retain that licence in the web copies supplied here. Their captions name the photographer or archive, link to the licence and identify resizing or other changes. Any copyright in our adaptations of those images is offered under the same licence; this does not license unrelated site text or other images.

Archival photographs are presented as historical evidence with captions explaining what they show and any limits. Editorial illustrations, including AI-generated hero artwork, are labelled separately. They are visual interpretations, not photographs of events, reconstructions supported in every detail, or evidence of a ship's exact appearance.

The source and rights of a photograph do not automatically apply to an illustration placed alongside it. Do not remove labels or attribution in a way that makes an illustration appear to be an original historical record.

Quoting and sharing

You are welcome to share links. If reproducing original text, acknowledge Wartime Chapters and link to the relevant page. Obtain permission unless an applicable licence or legal exception allows your use. UK copyright exceptions, including fair dealing for quotation where its conditions are met, are explained in the government's copyright guidance. There is no blanket exemption simply because a use is educational or non-commercial.

Public-domain material remains public domain; an open licence continues to govern material released under it. Any copyright in original site writing or arrangement does not create new ownership of the underlying historical facts.

Permissions and rights concerns

Email hello@wartimechapters.com with the page address, the specific item and your proposed use. For a rights concern, please identify the rights holder, your connection to the work, the relevant record or evidence, and the correction or action requested.

I will review credible concerns and correct credits, replace material or remove it where appropriate. Please avoid sending confidential documents unless they are necessary to explain the issue. Your correspondence is covered by the privacy notice.
