Last updated

Wartime Chapters is a personal history project run by Julian Mullins in the United Kingdom. This notice explains what happens to personal information when you read the site or get in touch.

Who is responsible?

Julian Mullins is the controller of personal information handled for this project. For privacy questions or requests, email hello@wartimechapters.com.

Reading the site

The site does not offer visitor accounts, comments, purchases or newsletter subscriptions. No advertising or visitor analytics code is included in this edition. Fonts, photographs and the search index are served with the site; there are no embedded social-media feeds or video players.

Cloudflare hosts and protects the site. To deliver pages and prevent abuse, its services process technical information such as your IP address, requested address, browser information and the time of a request. Security services may use cookies or similar identifiers. This is different from advertising tracking.

The review site at wartimechapters.jm1.uk is protected by Cloudflare Access. Reviewers may need to supply an email address and authenticate. Access can record identity, IP address, login times and access decisions, and uses authentication cookies to keep an authorised session open. The public website does not require a visitor account.

Search and appearance

Search matching takes place in your browser using an index downloaded from the site. The profiles directory puts its search and filter settings in the page address so a view can be shared or revisited. Those settings can appear in browser history and, when that address is requested, in hosting logs. Please do not put confidential information into search boxes.

If you choose light or dark appearance, your browser saves that choice on your device. It is not sent as a profile or identifier to an advertising service. The cookies and preferences page explains this storage and lets you clear the saved choice.

When you contact me

I receive your email address, message and any name, attachments or other information you choose to send. Cloudflare Email Routing forwards mail addressed to hello@wartimechapters.com to the project owner's mailbox. Email is also handled by the sending and receiving email providers.

I use correspondence to answer questions, investigate corrections and rights concerns, and manage contributions or permissions. Please send only information needed for your enquiry. I do not add correspondents to marketing lists. I will ask before publishing your private correspondence, contact details or a named acknowledgement, unless disclosure is required by law.

Why this information is used

For ordinary delivery, security and correspondence, I rely on legitimate interests: running and protecting a history website, responding to readers, and maintaining an accurate and responsibly sourced record. I consider the effect on your privacy and use only information relevant to these purposes. You can object to processing based on legitimate interests.

Where I ask for consent to publish personal information, you can withdraw that consent by email. Withdrawal does not affect processing that was lawful before withdrawal. Information may also need to be retained or disclosed to meet a legal obligation.

Who can receive it?

Cloudflare and the email providers involved process information needed to deliver their services. Relevant information may be shared with an archive, contributor or rights holder when necessary to investigate an issue; I will avoid sharing your personal details unnecessarily. Information may also be disclosed where legally required. I do not sell personal information.

Cloudflare operates internationally, so service data may be processed outside the UK. Its data processing addendum describes its transfer safeguards, including standard contractual clauses and the UK addendum where applicable. Its privacy policy explains its own processing. You can contact me for information about the providers and safeguards relevant to a particular enquiry.

How long information is kept

Routine correspondence is kept while an enquiry and any reasonable follow-up remain open, then reviewed for deletion. Permission records, substantive corrections and source correspondence may be kept while the associated material is used, and longer where needed to document a dispute or meet a legal obligation. This does not mean every message is kept permanently.

Technical and authentication records follow the retention settings and limits of the Cloudflare services in use; they are not a permanent reader history maintained by this site. Email copies may also remain in provider backups for their retention period. Contact me if you need the retention information relevant to your data. Browser preference storage lasts until you clear it or your browser removes it; authentication cookies expire according to the Access session settings.

Your choices and rights

Depending on the circumstances, you can ask to access or correct your personal information, have it erased, restrict its use, object to processing, or receive portable data where that right applies. These rights have legal limits. I may need enough information to verify that a request concerns your data. There is no automated decision-making intended to produce legal or similarly significant effects on you.

Email hello@wartimechapters.com to exercise a right or raise a concern. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK data protection regulator.

Other websites and changes

Archive and reference links take you to independent websites with their own privacy practices. This notice describes the current edition of Wartime Chapters. It will be reviewed when the site's features or data handling change; the date above records the latest revision.
